Signs of Heat Exhaustion in Your Dog

This summer has been brutal, and from what we here there is more heat on the way! We want you to keep an eye out for signs of heat exhaustion in your dog and know some of the things to look for. Take notice when you’re outside or even inside, on those hot days. These signs can be serious and can be a sign of not only heat exhaustion but heat stroke.

  • Excessive panting

  • Excessive drooling

  • Red gums

  • Rapid heart rate

  • Less than normal urine production

  • Irregular heartbeat

  • Black, tar-like stools

  • Noticeable changes in their behavior or mental capabilities

  • Tremors in muscles

  • Lack of coordination or looking “wobbly”

  • Seizure

  • Increased body temperature - 103 degrees or higher

Some causes of heat stroke are:

  • Excessive heat and humidity

  • Respiratory problems

  • Some poisonous compounds can cause heat stroke or heat exhaustion

  • Excessive exercise

  • Underlying health issues can also contribute, like obesity, heart disease to name just a few. Consult your vet if you think your dog may have a risk factor for heat exhaustion or heat stroke

A great solution to protect your pooch from the heat are Cooling Jackets/Vests:

    • Simply wet it with cool water, wring it out, and strap it on. As the water evaporates, your dog's temperature lowers. When it's dry, you just wet it again and keep going.
